OVERVIEW

Background

North Star helps high school students and families navigate the college application journey with more structure, personalization, and long-term support. The platform starts early, helping students build direction over time rather than scrambling during senior year.

Problem

Students were receiving guidance across multiple channels: advisor conversations, documents, scattered to-do lists, and mental notes.

No "Home Base"

Students did not have a strong “home base” that translated advising into action.

No "Visible Progress"

The college prep journey is long and emotionally heavy. Without visible progress, students can disengage.

No "Intuitive Connection"

Roadmap items, application materials, resume-building, and documents were related, but not connected in a way that felt intuitive.

Outcome

"Home Base" Dashboard

A clear home base for tracking progress, priorities, and deadlines. It helps students quickly understand what to focus on and stay motivated over time.

Step-by-step Roadmap

A semester-by-semester plan that turns long-term college prep into manageable milestones. It helps students stay on track and makes advisor guidance more actionable.

Advisor Panel

A dedicated space for students to access advisor support, book sessions, and revisit past guidance. It centralizes both scheduling and meeting history.

Track Applications

A structured space for building application materials over time. It encourages students to document achievements early instead of scrambling later.

Course Work

A planning tool that compares recommended and enrolled courses. It helps students make more informed academic decisions with advisor support.

REFLECTIONS

This project taught me on how to approach early-stage product design:

  • turning ambiguity into clear product structure

  • designing for both user needs and business positioning

  • building information architecture around real mental models

  • balancing practical constraints with a cohesive user experience
