3DCloud

In-depth process is not shown due to NDA. Reach out to learn more about this project.

BACKGROUND

3DCloud is a 3D smart sensor software of PIQS’s LP series 3D laser profiling system.

As a high-speed 3D Laser Profiler, the LP series aims to provide 3D measurements such as height difference, width, or angle to be performed using a single sensor. In addition to height data, LP profile sensors also collect intensity data to provide a stable solution for inline measurement and inspection. I was working under 3Dcloud segment, iterating on this supporting software.

THE PROBLEM

The lack of workflow logic and function grouping makes the whole process time-consuming, resulting in customer loss.

Due to time constraint, when 3DCloud was first launched, the arrangement of the functions were not carefully organized. Improving the user experience to make the whole process smoother was the top one request from users.

Function grouping of 3DCloud was limited.

Function grouping of 3DCloud was limited.

According to an interview with the users, it costs them a large amount of time just to locate the desired button. Only 11% of 3DCloud users are of the opinions that they can easily get to all the functions they need. This means that the majority had to switch to other competitors who provide a user-friendly operating system.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

How might we improve the function lay out to increase user retention?

Rearrange the functions, including merging, spliting and grouping;

Add batch-oriented operation button to all submodules;

Improve UI features.

Making 3DCloud capable, potentially more users would switch to LP series products from competitors. This can also attract new users to adopt LP Laser Profilers.
COMPETITOR ANALYSIS
Discover space for improvements.
I conducted a competitor analysis among the supporting software of major 3D laser profilers to understand how they arrange their interface lay out and find space for improvement.

USER INTERVIEWS

Evaluate the hypothesis.

I conducted interviews through zoom meeting and messaging with 9 users who provided feedback on the inconvenience they encountered while using 3DCloud, helped to evaluate the hypothesis I came up, and further discover their pain points using competing products.

“I wish the layout could be more 'focused', or, logically organized. It took me a lot of time to locate the button I want at first. Our customers get that problem a lot so they constantly contact me for assistance."

“Defect detection tools is in need of improvement. Currently there is only one ROI box by default. When you need, for example, 10 ROI boxes, which happens a lot, you need to modify the parameters one by one. That just takes a lot of time."

I think there's still room for improvement in terms of UI design. It would be great if they share a unified theme, like the UI in LMI.

“We really need more submenus. It would help a lot when selection multiple ROIs. Add an ROI submenu below the tool name, and we can select individual ROIs in the menu."

FINDINGS
Rearrange modules to improve usability.
  • The main page should be in three column, separating the toolbar and parameters;

  • More submenus should be added;

  • The shape of the ROI (Region of interest) should be allowed to customize;

  • The buttons in data debugging module should be regrouped;

  • Redo buttons should be added.

Reflections

After 2 rounds of final testing sessions, the survey result showed a 70% increase in user satisfaction, meeting the metrics set by product manager. User feedback also shows their preference of our software over alternative products.

Initially after the users described their views for design improvement orally during meeting, and I took notes in words. But then I found out that what misunderstood their words. So next time I took my laptop and iPad with me to create instant low-fidelity prototypes when discussing solutions.

Many of the solutions I proposed were challenged by PM and other other members in my team. And the survey we conducted later only confirmed their views. I realized when designing corporate products, it is crucial to make research-based decisions to ensure the accessibility of our product.

Designers should put themselves in other people's shoes when negotiating in a collaborative project. I persuaded the engineer, for instance, that my design would actually benefit their own jobs by thinking in their way.

Designing in real life is like a debate, we must be empathetic, thoughtful, logical, and persuasive at the same time.
